The match that opens the tournament
This is match one of fifty-one. The Asian Cup begins at King Fahd Sports City in Riyadh, the largest ground of the eight and the one that will also stage the final a month later, with the host nation walking out in front of a capacity that no other venue here comes close to.
Saudi Arabia have played in eleven previous Asian Cups and won three of them, but never at home: the tournament has never been staged in the kingdom before. Opening matches are rarely good football and often decisive anyway, and a host nation that drops points in the first ninety minutes spends the next two weeks answering for it.
Palestine come into it with a shorter history and a clearer recent trajectory. Their first two appearances, in 2015 and 2019, produced very little. The third, in 2023, produced a place in the round of 16. Drawing the hosts in the opening match of their fourth is the hardest possible start and the largest audience any Palestinian side has played in front of, which cuts both ways.
