Hosts for the first time
Saudi Arabia open their own tournament, and they do it as a host for the first time. In eighteen previous editions the Asian Cup had been staged everywhere from Hong Kong to Australia but never in the kingdom, so January 2027 is new ground for a country that has otherwise been near the centre of the competition for forty years.
Three titles put them level with Iran and behind only Japan, but all three came in a twelve-year window: 1984, 1988 and 1996. Since then the record reads as a series of near misses, including three lost finals. This is a twelfth appearance, and the first one where the pressure of the host nation comes with it.
How Saudi Arabia qualified
Saudi Arabia came through as hosts, confirmed on 1 February 2023.
