A record that needs explaining

Vietnam have a complicated Asian Cup record. South Vietnam, a different football association in a different country, took the fourth places listed against their name in 1956 and 1960. Vietnam as it exists now has never matched those two finishes.

This is a sixth appearance and the second in a row. Most of that record belongs to the last decade rather than to the 1950s. The closing game against Yemen is the one that decides their tournament.
