A title getting further away

Kuwait arrive at an eleventh Asian Cup with a title that keeps getting further away. They won the 1980 tournament at home in Kuwait City and finished runners-up four years earlier, and nothing in the four decades since has come close to matching either.

The recent story is one of long absences rather than deep runs, which makes qualification itself the achievement here. Group A pairs them with the hosts, with Oman and with Palestine: no continental heavyweight, and a realistic path out of the group for a side that has not had one in a long time.
