One shootout from the title

The United Arab Emirates came within a penalty shootout of the title in 1996, when they hosted the tournament and lost the final to Saudi Arabia after a goalless 120 minutes. That remains the high point of twelve appearances.

Two semi-finals since, in 2015 and 2019, are the closest they have come to repeating it. They qualified for 2027 as second-round group winners. South Korea come last, on 20 January, and that is where the group is likely to be settled.
