A quarter-final on debut

Tajikistan reached the quarter-finals on debut. They got there at their first Asian Cup, in 2023, having entered it with no tournament record of any kind. Their entire Asian Cup history is that one tournament, and it ended in the quarter-finals.

This is only their second appearance, which is the strange part: a team with a quarter-final on its record and almost no tournament history behind it. Group D, with Australia, Iraq and Singapore, will show whether 2023 was a breakthrough or a fortnight.

How Tajikistan qualified

Tajikistan came through as third round Group A winners, confirmed on 11 June 2024.
