Forty-three years to the knockout stage
Syria reached the round of 16 in 2023, at an eighth attempt and after forty-three years of trying. Every previous campaign had ended in the group stage, several of them without a win, so the knockout tie against Iran was the first genuinely competitive match Syria had played at this tournament.
They qualified for 2027 as third-round group winners, sealing it in October 2025, the earliest of the six sides who came through that route. The draw put them back with Iran, this time in the group stage.
How Syria qualified
Syria came through as third round Group E winners, confirmed on 14 October 2025.
