Back-to-back, and going for a third

Qatar have won the last two Asian Cups. The first, in 2019, came in the United Arab Emirates and finished with a win over Japan; the second, in 2023, came at home and finished with a win over Jordan. Four other nations have won consecutive editions before them, Japan among them.

What came before that run is the strange part. Nine appearances from 1980 onwards produced no title at all, and then two arrived in five years. Now they come to Saudi Arabia as double holders, drawn against Japan, Thailand and Indonesia.
