Four titles, and none since 2011
Four titles. Nobody has more, and Japan collected all four inside twenty years: 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2011. Three came away from home, which separates their record from most of the other champions in this field, several of whom won the tournament while hosting it.
The wait since 2011 is now longer than the gap between their first title and their third. And the draw has not helped: Group F is the hardest of the six, with Qatar the holders plus Thailand and Indonesia, and it carries six Asian Cup titles between four teams, more than any other group here.
How Japan qualified
Japan came through as second round Group B winners, confirmed on 2 April 2024.
