Champions with no home ground
Iraq won the 2007 Asian Cup while playing every match away from home, in a tournament shared between four Southeast Asian countries and against a background that made the run famous well beyond football. They beat Saudi Arabia in the final.
Twenty years on, this is an eleventh appearance and the title remains the only one. Iraq have reached the semi-finals once since, in 2015, and gone out in the group stage or the round of 16 the rest of the time. Group D puts them with Australia, the only other former champion in it, and with Tajikistan and Singapore. On paper that is a group Iraq should leave. On recent evidence it is not a certainty.
How Iraq qualified
Iraq came through as second round Group F winners, confirmed on 26 March 2024.
