Sixteen tournaments without a break
Iran have qualified for sixteen consecutive Asian Cups, every single edition since 1968. The next longest unbroken run in this field is Saudi Arabia’s twelve, and the first three of those tournaments produced the only three titles they have: 1968, 1972 and 1976, won back to back to back.
The fifty-one years since are the longest any of the twenty-four has gone without reaching a final. All three of Iran’s came in that opening run. Group C, with Syria, Kyrgyzstan and China, should not be where that story turns, but it is where it starts again.
How Iran qualified
Iran came through as second round Group E winners, confirmed on 26 March 2024.
