Two finals, no trophy

Fourteen appearances, two finals, no title. China lost the 1984 final to Saudi Arabia and the 2004 final to Japan, the second of them at home, and that pair of runner-up finishes is the closest any side in this field has come to winning the Asian Cup without ever doing it.

Two decades have passed since. The tournaments in between have ended in the quarter-finals or earlier, and expectations have narrowed accordingly. Group C gives them Iran, Syria and Kyrgyzstan, and a place in the last sixteen would count as a good month.
