Twenty-four teams, fifty-one matches
The AFC Asian Cup 2027 is played by 24 teams across 51 matches. Thirty-six of those are in the group stage: six groups of four, each team playing the other three once. The remaining fifteen are knockout ties.
Sixteen teams reach the round of 16. Twelve of those places go to the six group winners and six runners-up. The other four go to the best third-placed teams, ranked against each other across all six groups on points, then goal difference, then goals scored.
How the round of 16 is drawn
Because the identity of the four qualifying third-placed teams is not known until the last group match finishes, the bracket is fixed by group letter rather than by team. Four of the eight ties pair a group winner with a third-placed side, and which third-placed side depends on which groups they came from. The other four pair runners-up against each other or against group winners.
From the round of 16 onwards a tie level after ninety minutes goes to extra time and, if still level, penalties. Two of the eighteen previous finals were decided on penalties and two more in extra time.
There is no third-place play-off
The arithmetic confirms it: 36 group matches, eight in the round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and one final make 51. A third-place match would make 52.
The group stage is not always two matchdays apart
Each group plays three rounds, but the rounds are not always on a single day. In Groups A, C and D the second round is split across two dates, which is why a team can play its second group match a day before or after the other pair in its group. The final round in every group is played simultaneously.
